The Difficult Run Trail is a .7 mile (1.1 km) trail that follows the Difficult Run stream, a tributary of the Potomac River and the southern border of Great Falls Park 2 miles south of the Visitor Center and parking. The trail involves walking on mostly flat terrain with some steep uphill areas offering scenic views of a typical stream valley. Difficult Run has been called a miniature Mather Gorge and Great Falls by local Geologists. As one follows Difficult Run from Georgetown Pike to the Potomac River you can see a sequence of topographical similarities. The stream is flat and wide at the top with calm waters typical of the Potomac River above the falls. Suddenly it picks up speed as it narrows into a steep gorge with a small set of picturesque waterfalls. Quickly the water reaches the same level as the Potomac. The mouth of Difficult Run is a sweeping panoramic view of the Potomac River. Muskrat and beaver have been seen in the stream, and the area where the stream empties into the Potomac River is known for good fishing. If your interest takes you to Difficult Run, plan on a 4.5 mile (approximately 3 hour) loop from the Visitor Center and return trip. Bring water to drink and consider a picnic lunch.

The trail can be accessed from the Ridge Trail coming off the River Trail at Cow Hoof Rock or via the Old Carriage Road Trail. You can help keep Great Falls trash free. Pack out what you pack in.

Warning! No swimming or wading is allowed in Great Falls Park. Both the Potomac River and Difficult Run contain strong, deadly currents at all river levels.
Be safe and enjoy the park.
