National Register of Historic Places

Welcome to the National Register Information System (NRIS), the official database of the National Register of Historic Places. The NRIS contains information on more than 80,000 properties and includes an searchable index of more than two million terms.

You can use the NRIS in a number of ways:

Download software for filling out National Register FORMS and submitting them electronically.

Search it directly from the WEB. This option allows you to query a relational database and receive your answer through the web where the html pages are built "on the fly". Unlike some applications, these pages return all qualifying entries not some arbitrary number (such as 50) at a time. Initially this takes a little longer but the advantage is that when you want to print 3000 properties you do not have to print 50 at a time. This option will be expanded.

Search it through TELNET, a fundamental Internet protocol for database access. This method runs quickly and currently provides the most sophisticated search and retrieval programs, allowing you to look for properties by name, location, person, or status. Summary paragraphs are available for selected locations in Baltimore, Chicago, and Seattle. More will follow.

If you already have a telnet client configured (MS telnet does not work) you can begin your search by typing NATREG at the initial prompt to begin. If you need a telnet program, use any search engine to find one. Telnet users may want to take a few moments to go over the sample searches or go to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for clarification.

Download it through FTP, or the Internet File Transfer Protocol. This option is best suited for the experienced user who wants to incorporate some or all of the data into another computer system in order to manipulate it further. The file interchange format is dBASEIII Plus. Read the readme.txt file first.

Connect through a modem. If your Internet connection fails to work properly, you may want to try this method (long-distance telephone charges apply).
