Ani DiFranco, folk singer-songwriter, guitarist, label owner, and political activist, performs in Washington in 2004. DiFranco emerged as an icon of feminism and independent music making in the late 20th century, and is the subject of one of 68 new articles on popular music post-1945 from the forthcoming second edition of The Grove Dictionary of American Music.
