Prince Albert National Park was established by order-in-council on March 24, 1927. It was officially opened on August 10, 1928 by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King.

During the economic depression of the 1930s and the Second World War, Relief Camps and Alternate Service Work Camps operated in the park. Many of the park's historic facilities and roads/trails were completed by these workers during this time.
