In Ireland we use a system called proportional representation with single transferable vote. When you go into the polling station you are handed a voting paper with every candidate running in your area listed in alphabetical order. It is a list of independent candidates and candidates who are members of political parties. In Dublin South East there are 16 candidates so here your voting paper would have 16 people listed on it. You then place a number beside each candidate; 1 beside the person you prefer, 2 beside your next favourite person etc. until you put 16 beside your least favourite candidate.
