When reading, the parallell rays change into a divergent direction towards the eye. In order to keep the rays in focus on the retina, the lens increases its refractive power automatically by getting thicker (accommodation of the eye).

With increasing age this ability of the lens to increase its power is gradually reduced. Therefore reading glasses are necessary between the age of 40 and 50 years
