Dr Daniel Kowalsky
BA (Oregon), MA (New Mexico), PhD (Wisconsin–Madison) Lecturer in Modern European History Tel: +44 (0) 28 9097 3436 Danny Kowalsky was born in Burns, Oregon in 1966. He read history and classics with Joseph Fracchia at the University of Oregon, before taking an MA in European history at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where he studied with Robert Kern and Charles McClelland. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, working under the tutelage of Stanley G. Payne. The doctorate in hand in spring 2001, he took successive lecturing posts in the history departments at Washington University in St Louis, The American University in Cairo and the University of Bristol. He became a permanent member of the Queen’s staff in summer 2005. Research InterestsA specialist in 20th-century Spain and interwar diplomatic history, Danny’s thesis focused on Soviet involvement in the Spanish Civil War, and was awarded the American Historical Association’s Gutenberg-e Prize in 2001. The revised manuscript was recently published on both sides of the Atlantic: with Columbia University Press, and Editorial Crítica. He has published an anthology of new research on the Spanish Civil War for St. James Press and has begun researching and writing on fringe cinema during the democratic transition in Spain. In addition, Danny is the series editor for the Soviet volumes on British documents on foreign affairs. He is preparing a short volume entitled Decree and power, an expansion of his earlier work on Soviet intervention in the Spanish Civil War. In addition to his teaching and publication schedule, Danny is a regular participant in research seminars at Paris IV/Sorbonne, the Cañada Blanch Centre/London School of Economics, the Casa Velazquez-Madrid, and the Society for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies in the United States. As a guest speaker, he has appeared at universities throughout Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania.
