City of Renton Loses a Wonderful Volunteer
Mary Breda, a long-time Renton resident and volunteer, passed away August 25. Mary volunteered at the Renton City Hall information desk for over 21 years -- from June of 1984 to July of 2005. She contributed over 8,900 volunteer hours to the City Hall information desk program. Mary was a wonderful person who made every visitor to City Hall feel welcome, and staff throughout the City of Renton wish to express their condolences and best wishes to Mary's family.
Bench dedication honoring former City of Renton Mayor Jesse Tanner to be held on lawn at City Hall Sept. 8
The City of Renton will be honoring the memory and service of former City Council Member and Mayor Jesse Tanner Sept. 8, 2008, at 2 p.m. by dedicating a bench on the grounds of City Hall in his honor. The dedication will be held on the City Hall lawn, and a reception will follow from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Print an invitation.
Puget Sound Energy Offers Free Bulb Exchange at McClendon's Hardware, Sept. 13
Puget Sound Energy representatives will be in the parking lot of McClendon's Hardware (440 Rainier Avenue S) Saturday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to exchange your incandescent portable lamps and bulbs for ENERGY STAR lighting for FREE! Simply bring to the event up to two of your incandescent lamps and up to four incandescent light bulbs and PSE will exchange them for ENERGY STAR lighting for free (while supplies last). You must be a PSE residential electric customer to qualify, so bring I.D. for verification. More information.
Renton Welcomes the Seahawks
To celebrate the arrival of the Seattle Seahawks to their new home along the southern shores of Lake Washington, the Renton Community Marketing Campaign is providing the community with Cheer Cards to display proudly throughout the city. City interactive maps now available online
There are two new sets of interactive maps on the City's community services pages. One is a set of maps showing the parks, cultural and recreational facilities within the city and the other shows the locations and contact information of Human Services agencies in Renton.
Duvall Ave. Construction & Detours
Duvall Ave. NE will be widened to five lanes over the next year (including a two-way left-turn center lane). Stay updated about the Duvall Ave. construction work and detours by bookmarking its Web page: duvall.rentonwa.gov.
The IRS is seeking Retirees, Disabled Veterans who have yet to file for Economic Stimulus Payments
The Internal Revenue Service seeks to reach those retirees and disabled veterans who qualify for the economic stimulus payment but have not filed to claim it. New statistics indicate about 74 percent in this group are accounted for in the stimulus payments currently being sent, leaving about 5.2 million potential recipients remaining. Latino Health Fair for South King County Residents Scheduled for Sept. 6
A Latino Health Fair for South King County residents focusing on providing health related resources and education for Spanish-speaking families is scheduled Sept. 6 at the Grace Community Church in Auburn. There will be free health, vision, and dental screenings, health insurance, food, raffles, music and much more. Download the flyer: in english; en espanol.
Speed Cameras Citations to begin September 16 at McKnight Middle School and Renton High School --
30-Day Warning Period begins September 2 at Talbot Hill Elementary
The registered owners of cars who exceed the school zone speed limit at McKnight Middle School and Renton High School will receive a ticket for $124 when the speed violation is exceeded by 6 to 15 mph over the posted school zone speed and $250 if the speed limit is exceeded by 16 mph or more. The city has also installed speed cameras at Talbot Hill Elementary School and a 30-day warning period will begin on September 2.
Annexation Special Census
The City has contracted with Census Services to conduct a special census of the Liberty Annexation Area. Read more.
Renton Farmers Market at the Piazza
The Renton Farmers Market has st arted up again every Tuesday at the Piazza 3-7 p.m. For more information, call 425.679.1502 or visit www.rentonfarmersmarket.com.
Parking is limited at Renton City Hall.
In order to provide adequate short term parking for visitors to Renton City Hall, and to minimize traffic congestion, parking on upper level (P3) , will be limited to 2 hours.
Additional parking will be available at Sam's Club, on the east side of their main parking lot. Please note that overflow parking is not allowed near their loading dock. SEE MAP (pdf).
WSDOT Projects
WSDOT is making improvements to State Route 515 between SE 192nd and Benson Rd. and to I-405 and SR 167. Stay updated about lane closures and construction related to the I-405 and SR167 projects at the WSDOT website.
HOT lanes (high occupancy toll lanes) are a new option for solo drivers on SR 167. They are scheduled to open on Saturday, May 3. Read more.
