METALLICA Among Top-Selling Artists Of SOUNDSCAN Era - Apr. 5, 2008
According to Paul Grein of Yahoo! Music's "Chart Watch", METALLICA is in fifth place on Nielsen SoundScan's list of top-selling album artists, with cumulative sales of 48,867,000 in the United States since the scanning service set up shop in May 1991. They'll hit the 50 million mark around the summer of 2009.

The top 10 artists in Nielsen SoundScan history are, in order:

01. GARTH BROOKS: 67,774,000
02. THE BEATLES: 56,110,000
03. MARIAH CAREY: 50,004,000
04. CELINE DION: 49,951,000

06. GEORGE STRAIT: 39,403,000
07. TIM MCGRAW: 36,657,000
08. ALAN JACKSON: 35,654,000
09. PINK FLOYD: 34,665,000
10. SHANIA TWAIN: 33,591,000

METALLICA's self-titled album from 1991 (also known as the "black" album) is the No. 2 top-selling album of the SoundScan era. The LP shifted 258,000 units in the U.S. in 2007 to bring total sales to 15,077,000 (as of the close of 2007) and closing the gap to the No. 1 album on the list, SHANIA TWAIN's "Come on Over", by 372,000 units. If these percentages keep up, "Metallica" will overtake "Come on Over" during 2009.

METALLICA's top-selling albums during the SoundScan era (as of March 30, 2008):

01. "Metallica" (1991): 15,136,000
02. "…And Justice for All" (1988): 5,114,000 *

05. "Ride the Lightning" (1984): 4,162,000 *

* Does not include sales prior to the start of the SoundScan era (May 25, 1991).

Notice that the old ones dont count before Soundscan, when they probably sold alot, also.

Gn'R never moved anywhere near that many units. As for Garth Brooks, never underestimate the power of the redneck.

Gotta love the pea-brained Met-bashers' logic. According to them, good music is defined by whether or not it's played on the radio. LOL. Keep hating, ladies. Nobody in the 'tallica scene misses you or needs you around.

Instead of whining and bitching bout metallica been on there why not be proud of the fact theres at least one metal band on that list. You americans are always whining and complaning why europe has the best tours etc. Its cos u guys always bitching bout which band sold-out and which sub-genre a band comes under. Europeans don't give a shit, whatr sub-genre or whether there famous...fuck all that. What matters is if its loud, its heavy.....ITS GOOD.

Everyone talks about Metallica getting mad because they lose money from illegal downloads. Like they are being greedy sellout bastards. No one even remembers why that whole napster ordeal started. This was back when the whole illegal downloading controversy started. The only reason they said anything about Napster is because "I Disappear" was being played on the radio before they even released it. It wasnt the final version and it was being put out there without the final tweaks. So of course the band werent used to this sort of thing yet and they got pissed. It was becasue of Napster that the radio stations got ahold of it. They may be past their time and not putting out quality metal anymore but they are still a great rock band and you cant blame them for getting upset and wanting to do something about it.

"who the hell's this guy they call Bob Cock???"

That'd be Bob Rock who was once a credible producer back in his time. That time being over 20 years ago although I still have a soft spot for his work on "Dr. Feelgood" and even Metallica's 1991 best-seller. He fell far off the peak years ago though I still feel that Metallica were just as instrumental in their own downfall.

its not really a metal album (although by this band's standards it is) but as far as Bob Rock produced albums go Beyond Good and Evil by the Cult was well done. Its actually a pretty rad hard rock album.

As far as metallica goes I don't get what the big deal is about the black album. People talk about Metallica like they were the be all of music. Who cares. They were just one band. I like the black album just fine. Its an album a band released that I like. I don't really care what they did before or after. If I was desperate for some good thrash I'd listen to Testament. If I wanted to be amazed by technicality or something I could listen to Vital Remains or Nevermore.

Point is there is music everywhere and you shouldn't wait for 1 band to satisfy all your metal needs.

You shouldn't still be bitching about an album almost 20 years after it came out.

Closing in on 50 MILLION records since 1991 in the U.S. ALONE. That's sick.

Will always love Metallica, but I'm afraid they are just a brand now and have been for a while.

They are a corporate machine existing for the sole purpose of making $$$.

And I am a sucker and will still buy TWO copies of their next record and do my best to battle the haters on Blabbermouth. All because I love the band.

P.S.: All haters are a bunch of pretentious swine and will hopefully some day suffer a horrible death at the hands of a runaway milk truck or pack of rabid chickens.
