Welcome

The Royal Institute of Philosophy is a charity dedicated to the advancement of philosophy in all its branches through the organisation and promotion of teaching, discussion and research of all things philosophical. The Institute is not committed to any particular philosophical school or method or, of course, any ideology.

You can use this site to find out more about the Institute’s many activities, join the Institute, read samples from past and forthcoming issues of Philosophy and Think, read parts of upcoming lectures in the London Series and the Annual Lecture.  You can also leave comments, questions and discuss topics raised by all of our activities on the Institute's Blog.  Click on the links in the side bar for further details, but in short, here are the main activities of the Institute:

Publications:  The Institute publishes two journals, Philosophy and Think, as well as two books each year – one contains the collected papers of a conference sponsored by the Institute and the other brings together the talks given at the Institute’s London Lectures.

Public Lectures:  The Institute supports philosophical activities across the UK through a system of branches.  The Institute’s Annual Lecture brings philosophers of international standing to London each year.  The Institute has organised the London Lecture Series since 1930, bringing themed lectures to Bloomsbury every Friday evening during term.  The Institute also supports an annual Departmental Conference.  These events are generally free and open to the public.

Funding and Education:  The Institute offers Jacobsen Fellowships and Royal Institute Bursaries to philosophy postgraduates.  Thanks to the Jacobsen Trust, the Institute brings free ten-week philosophy courses to students in up to 20 schools across the UK.  As part of a recent initiative, the Institute now offers funding to support visits to UK philosophy departments from philosophers from new EU nations.

Membership:  Membership is open to all those interested in philosophy and includes a subscription to the Institute’s journal Philosophy.  Members can apply for a free reader’s card for Senate House Library and are entitled to discounts on the purchase of Institute’s books.
