Pneumococcal Awareness Council of Experts (PACE)
Pneumococcal disease is a deadly infectious disease that kills 1.6 million people, including 800,000 children under age five, each year. Global awareness of this deadly disease, however, remains low. In 2006, the Sabin Vaccine Institute developed the Pneumococcal Awareness Council of Experts (PACE), a group of the world's leading experts on infectious diseases and vaccines, to raise awareness about pneumococcal disease and to advocate for its prevention through vaccination. The Council's 18 members represent Bangladesh, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, the Czech Republic, Israel, Kenya, Mali, Mexico, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Spain, Sweden and the United States.
The objectives of PACE are to:
- Elevate pneumococcal disease on the global health agenda. PACE will build a strong coalition of leaders from around the globe to raise awareness about pneumococcal disease and make prevention a priority.
- Educate policymakers about the pneumococcal disease threat worldwide. PACE will raise awareness about pneumococcal disease.through participation in global health symposia, targeted advocacy among key global health and financial decision makers, and recognition of those nations and leaders who make pneumococcal disease prevention a priority,
- Advocate for the prevention of pneumococcal disease through widespread vaccination. Pneumococcal disease is preventable, and a safe and effective vaccine currently exists. Bacterial resistance to common antibiotics continues to expand worldwide, and the need to deliver effective pneumococcal vaccines has never been greater. By fully funding pneumococcal vaccines worldwide, PneumoADIP estimates that 5.4 million children's lives can be saved by 2030.
- Secure commitments from global nations to combat the disease. A $1.5 billion Advance Market Commitment from five key donor countries and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation -- and promising advances in pneumococcal vaccines -- has created an unprecedented opportunity to protect children and adults from this deadly but preventable disease.
