San Jose, Calif.-----Gustavo Ayón, a 6-foot-11 center who played one season of basketball for the Universidad Popular Autonoma Del Estado de Puebla in Mexico,
has accepted a scholarship offer from San Jose State University and plans to enroll at the university for the 2006 fall semester. George Nessman, the head coach
of the Spartans, made the announcement.
Ayón was named the “Most Valuable Player” of the 2006 Mexican national college championship tournament as he helped his team win a championship for
the third year in a row. A two-sport athlete, he played volleyball into his teenage years before devoting his full-time athletic endeavors to basketball.
“We’re really pleased an excited that Gustavo is joining our program. His size and athleticism, in combination, are very unique. He’s 6-foot-11, 245 pounds,
and is very agile and mobile for a player his size. He’s equally effective as a face-the-basket and back-to-the-basket player. Gustavo’s an outstanding young
person who we think will be a great contributor to our program,” said Nessman who indicated Ayón, as a transfer from a four-year university, will be eligible to play
as a Spartan in 2007-08 and will have sophomore standing.
“Gustavo will be great fit for our up-tempo playing style. He’s a high-quality player who has a great chance to be an ‘impact player’ for us,” added the
Spartans coach about Ayón who is allowed to practice with the team during the 2006-07 season.
