About the Developers

Winthrop Morgan & Associates (WMA) was founded in 2005 to serve as an alternative to traditional marketing and communication firms in the Washington, DC area.  We provide short-term specialized consultations on how to apply commercial marketing techniques and best-practice communication models to promote socially beneficial goods, services, ideas, and behaviors.

Our mission is to provide affordable senior-level strategic communication analysis, design, development, and production management to government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and social entrepreneurs in the areas of health, education and international development.   We provide on-demand expertise for a fraction of what it would cost to hire a full-time senior communication specialist.

Clients hire us to address problems such as:

  • lack of awareness of the organization or products
  • incomplete understanding or misperceptions
  • unfavorable  or weak positioning in the mind of their intended users
  • lack of demand for a product or service
  • misapplication or lack of application of products, information or services
  • gatekeeper barriers or lack of external evangelists

We help design strategies and plans to package, announce, promote, and deliver products in user-friendly, attractive, low cost ways.  We work to enhance not only the value of individual products, but also the reputation of the organization producing it.

Our approach reflects the following principles:

  • Think Big. Start small. Act now.
  • Ask. Listen. Reflect. Integrate.
  • Sacrifice for focus.
  • Quality costs less.
  • Process improves products.
  • I am not the target audience.
  • Continuity is not optional.

Our credentials come from some of the most respected institutions in communication, proposal management, online business, including the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, Shipley Associates, and Google.com.

Our experience was earned working with the best-of-the-best agencies and institutions, including CBS Television Network, the Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs, the World Bank, and the National Institutes of Health.

New standard for social marketing to promote healthy lifestyles

LONDON - The Marketing and Sales Standard Setting Body (MSSSB) has created what it claims is the world's first National Occupational Standards for Social Marketing.

The new social marketing standards, approved by the UK Commission for Employment Skills (UKCES), will help marketers use marketing tools to promote a healthier society. The standards provide an accurate description of the performance required of those working in the field of social marketing and of the knowledge and skills that they require. Dr Chahid Fourali, head of the MSSSB, said of the new standard said: ‘Over the past few years there has been an explosion in social marketing and it is now a recognised area of expertise. The new standards will help marketers implement best practice, and help organisations understand how social marketing can and cannot be used. The standards will also help build a new image of marketing as a socially responsible discipline.'

The new standards have been the result of consultation with social marketing practitioners in the UK and abroad.
