ISO13616 IBAN Registry

National IBAN formats

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. The IBAN facilitates the automation of cross-border payment transaction processing. Each country has its particular national IBAN format. The ISO 13616 standard specifies the structure of an ISO-compliant national IBAN format. A copy of the ISO 13616 standard can be obtained through www.ISO.org.

National IBAN format registration process

ISO has designated SWIFT to act as the registration authority for national IBAN formats. Only a national standards body or a national central bank can request a national IBAN format registration for its country. To request the registration of a national IBAN format or to update an existing one, download the IBAN Registration Form , complete it, and send it to IBAN.FORMAT@swift.com.

IBAN Registry

SWIFT publishes the ISO 13616 IBAN Registry. This registry contains the technical specification of the national IBAN formats of those countries that are compliant with the ISO 13616 standard. The IBAN Registry is updated upon request from the ISO national standards bodies or the national central banks. Download here the IBAN Registry (in PDF format). The Registry is also available in .txt format.

IBAN validation

A number of organisations offer online tools to validate the structure of IBANs. One example is the UN/CEFACT TBG5 IBAN ‘validator’ which can be accessed via http://www.tbg5-finance.org/?ibancheck.shtml.
