city wakes poster signed by mick rockWe are delighted to announce that we have 50 City Wakes posters, signed by Mick Rock, for sale in our online gallery. These posters are only available from the Syd Barrett Trust and all proceeds will go to towards supporting the Trust's work in arts in mental health.

Mick Rock recently became a Patron of the Syd Barrett Trust and is one of the few people who really knew Syd well.

"Understandably, most people think of Syd as a dark, brooding, inarticulate Prince of Psychedelia gone haywire, but the strongest impression he left on me from the times we spent together, was of his laughter. He liked to laugh."

Syd Barrett - Le Pemier Pink Floyd by Emmanuel le Bret. Published in French on January 15th 2009

Fondateur de Pink Floyd, il signe à vingt ans l'essentiel du premier album du groupe, The piper at the gates of dawn, véritable révolution sonore.

people painting

The UFO, supporters of The Other Room, hosted a special "People Painting" during The City Wakes events: a blank canvas available for visitors to "offer their love and creativity to Syd Barrett", of whom The City Wakes was commemorating. Everyone had the opportunity to express themselves.

The Result: Group creations that nobody could predict. Participation was essential. Just like a happening which includes the audience, the People Paintings are a pleasant artifact left by the people who were there, part of a fantastic event. In Roger Keith 'Syd' Barrett’s spirit, seven paintings were produced, each one an artistic thumbprint impression of each of The City Wakes events. Each painting is totally original and includes a certificate of authenticity, along with the signatures of each of the artists who participated in their creation.

The UFO is auctioning the paintings that were created during The City Wakes on eBay to raise more funds for The Syd Barrett Trust. The auctions are now live, with a finish date of January 10th. More details, including links to the paintings on Ebay, at Brain Damage.

"The 1960s and 1970s represent a rare moment in our cultural history -- music was exploring unprecedented territories, literature was undergoing a radical reinvention, politics polarized the nation, and youth culture was at the zenith of its influence. There has never been, nor is there likely to be, another generation that matches the contributions of the artists of that time period.

In this poignant book, journalist Mikal Gilmore weaves a narrative of the '60s and '70s as he examines the lives of the era's most important cultural icons. Keeping the power of rock & roll at the forefront, Gilmore gathers together stories about major artists from every field -- George Harrison, Ken Kesey, Johnny Cash, Allen Ginsberg, to name just a few. Gilmore reveals the truth about this idealized period in history, never shying away from the ugly influences that brought many of rock's most exciting figures to their knees. He examines how Jim Morrison's alcoholism led to the star's death at the age of twenty-seven, how Jerry Garcia's drug problems brought him to the brink of death so many times that his bandmates did not believe the news of his actual demise, how Pink Floyd struggled with the guilt of kicking out founding member Syd Barrett because of his debilitating mental illness. As Gilmore examines the dark side of these complicated figures, he paints a picture of the environment that bred them, taking readers from the rough streets of Liverpool (and its more comfortable suburbs) to the hippie haven of Haight-Ashbury that hosted the infamous Summer of Love. But what resulted from these lives and those times, Gilmore argues, was worth the risk -- in fact, it may be inseparable from those hard costs.

The lives of these dynamic and diverse figures are intertwined with Gilmore's exploration of the social, political, and emotional characteristics that defined the era. His insights and examinations combine to create a eulogy for a formative period of American history."
