Management, earned E-Gov Institute’s 2006 Knowledge Management (KM) award for best
practices in a public sector organization.

Presented on April 20, 2006, at FCW Events’ E-Gov Knowledge Management conference in
Washington, D.C., the award recognizes a
KM Initiative Delivering High Value to a Broad User
Community / Supporting Agency Mission.

The KM Awards Selection Committee is comprised of leaders from the public and private
sectors who are actively engaged in KM programs for the government.
Air Force Knowledge Now (AFKN) is the U.S. Air Force’s (USAF) only certified and accredited
enterprise-wide KM and knowledge-based collaborative capability. AFKN grew from a
grassroots
effort with little corporate sponsorship and even less funding to a mission-essential
tool used daily by thousands of people around the globe. With more than 5,000 Communities of
Practice and 140,000 registered users, AFKN supports every USAF command, as well as others
throughout each branch of service and a multitude of industry partners.
AFKN provides a portfolio of KM tools which revolves around the concept of Communities of
Practice. Online virtual collaboration and sharing is enabled through document upload and
storage as well as threaded discussion forums. Additional modules include a validated practices
library, integrated e-learning modules, wisdom exchange, expertise locators, and virtual
mentorship capabilities. A powerful search capability links these modules, allowing access to
more than 3 million web-pages.
The AFKN team leverages proven KM practices and consulting expertise to garner leadership
support, break down barriers to knowledge sharing, build organizational taxonomies, and
conduct KM workshops. By leading organizations through the development of a mission-focused
KM governance model, as well as a personalized implementation plan, AFKN helps customers
