This site is dedicated to the memory of the RMS MAURETANIA, the most famous ship ever built on Tyneside, and the now lost skills of the shipyard workers that went into her construction.

The centenary of the launch of the MAURETANIA in September 2006 gave the opportunity for a year long celebration of the ship, including a re-creation of magic lantern shows given by the shipyard’s Technical Manager, Harry Bocler, in village halls and schools throughout the region.

Thanks to generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund you are now looking at the website which is the culmination of the celebrations. By clicking on the various titles in the header you can enter the following sections:-

Story
A short history of MAURETANIA from inception in 1902 to her scrapping in 1935.

A selection of over 100 images, based around the original magic lantern slides, many of which are previously unpublished.

Education
