WELCOME TO TIMPANOGOS HIGHWAY
Timpanogos Highway (State Route 92) is the main east-west corridor for the communities of Alpine, Highland, Cedar Hills and northeast Lehi, as well as the primary access road for American Fork Canyon. Thousands of vehicles travel this corridor every day for a variety of reasons: for access to and from I-15, local travel or recreational purposes.
This area in northern Utah County is growing at a rapid pace. In order to improve mobility and accessibility, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is expanding Timpanogos Highway from I-15 to S.R. 74 (Alpine Highway) in Highland.
With this project, UDOT will do the following:
- Widen Timpanogos Highway to five lanes from I-15 to S.R. 74.
- Build "Commuter Lanes" from I-15 to Highland Boulevard. These lanes provide a direct connection to and from I-15 without stopping at traffic signals.
- Construct segments of multi-use trails to enhance the existing trail system in the area. Construction is currently under way and is expected to be complete in Fall 2011.
Once the project is complete, Timpanogos Highway users will experience:
- An improved commute to and from I-15
- Improved and safer access at local intersections
- An expanded trail system
This $148 million project is being constructed with a combination of federal and state funds.
Construction Zone Safety
Construction work zones present a challenge to drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and construction crews. Construction workers are performing difficult tasks with live traffic just a few feet away and drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists are traveling through unfamiliar and often-changing road conditions. This is true with the Timpanogos Highway project. Many areas along the road have little or no shoulder area, which makes it difficult for bicyclists or joggers to stay out of the traffic lane. Recently, some pedestrians have been walking or running just beyond construction barriers and barrels in what is actually an official construction zone. This area is restricted to construction personnel only.
UDOT's first goal in every construction project is to make sure no one gets hurt. Here are four rules to help you stay safe:
- Do not enter construction zones
- Be alert and careful near construction zones
- Cross only at assigned areas
- Find an alternate route for walking or biking
With warm weather comes increased recreational traffic on Timpanogos Highway. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and watch out for cyclists riding through the construction zone. Cyclists using Timpanogos Highway are encouraged to seek alternate routes. Throughout the summer, drivers and cyclists should be prepared to share the road.
S.R. 92 Will Now Be Timpanogos Highway
Online Contest Results in New Secondary Name for Roadway
When the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) officially opens the completed State Route 92 reconstruction project next fall, the roadway will not only have five brand new lanes plus two brand new commuter lanes, it will also have a brand new name: Timpanogos Highway. Though the road's official designation will always be State Route 92, Timpanogos Highway will be the road's secondary name, and will appear on road signs being created as part of the S.R. 92 reconstruction project.
The new name was selected by a panel of judges from 423 nominations that were submitted by visitors to UDOT's S.R. 92 project website. The judging panel consisted of nine community leaders, including mayors, members of the state House of Representatives, a member of the state Transportation Commission and a UDOT representative.
Timpanogos Highway was the most-nominated name submitted for consideration, with 63 nominations. Variations on the theme - including "Timp Highway," "Timpanogos Cave Highway" and "Timpanogos Parkway" - were also plentiful. The first nomination for "Timpanogos Highway" was submitted by Heidi Boyer of Highland, Utah.
The Timpanogos Highway Project team encourages motorists to TravelWise. To avoid construction zone dangers, cyclists and pedestrians are urged to seek alternate routes.
Please visit our website to view a new animation showing how to navigate the new diverging diamond interchange as well as the commuter lanes.
With the beginning of school Aug. 23, please use extra caution when traveling through the area. Crews are working heavy equipment as they continue the expansion of the highway.
Interchange Area:The interchange has now been converted to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). Please visit our website to view a flyer describing the work necessary for this conversion and to view an instructional graphic on driving a DDI. Work will continue for the next six weeks and the interchange down to one lane in each direction. Flaggers are posted to help drivers navigate through the interchange safely while construction continues.
*NEW* - As early as Aug. 19, crews will shift drivers to the inside travel lanes at the DDI while they work in the outside lanes. Traffic will be in this lane configuration for approximately three weeks.
*NEW* - The night of Aug. 26 and 27, crews are scheduled to restripe the lane markings on I-15 and back to the original lane configuration. Two lanes will be closed beginning at 9 p.m. and three lanes at 11 p.m. Drivers should expect moderate travel delays.
*NEW* - As early as the night of Aug. 25, workers will place the final asphalt surface at the intersection of Thanksgiving Way and S.R. 92 from 2 a.m .to 6 a.m. Crews will also complete paving a portion of the southbound off-ramp.
Through September, all Timpanogos Highway shoulders between Ashton Blvd. and the east frontage road are closed. This includes all shoulders on the on- and off-ramps to I-15. Please watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting from the shoulders.
Through the end of September, reconstruction work on Timpanogos Highway between Thanksgiving Way and Ashton Blvd. continues. Watch for traffic shifts and expect delays in this area both day and night.
Through the summer, the sidewalks on both sides of Clubhouse Drive (Timpanogos Highway) between Ashton Boulevard and Thanksgiving Way are closed. Through September, crews will continue installing street lighting, building new sidewalk and finish landscaping in this area.
Drivers using the East Frontage Road are shifted to the east side of the road. This configuration will be in effect through early September.
Both directions of traffic on Timpanogos Highway are shifted to the north between the east frontage road and Triumph Blvd. The shoulders remain closed. Please only stop in case of an emergency. This configuration is in place until the middle of September.
The intersection of Morning Glory Road and Timpanogos Highway is now open to traffic. Please be aware that there is no center median on Timpanogos Highway in this area.
Through August, flaggers will be stationed just west of Center Street to assist haul trucks across the roadway. Motorists should expect brief, occasional stops
*NEW* - Bridge construction continues over Center Street. At the intersection of Center Street crews continue placing concrete pavement at the east side of the intersection. Once the concrete is ready within the next two weeks, drivers will be switched onto the new pavement and paving work will begin on the west side of the intersection.
*NEW* - As early as Aug. 29, traffic is scheduled to be shifted to the south side of the road between 400 East and 1200 East in Lehi while crews place new concrete pavement on the north half of the road. Drivers will be in this configuration through September.
*NEW* - At the 400 East intersection, drivers should expect shifting lane configurations at this intersection. Access to the IM Flash area will be maintained.
*NEW* - As early as Aug. 29 southbound drivers on 1200 East will be moved onto new pavement.
At the 1200 East bridge crews will construct bridge monuments and parapets (safety walls).
Traffic on Highland Blvd. north of Timpanogos Highway is shifted to a new temporary alignment. This is necessary so that a new bridge can be constructed under Highland Blvd. at the intersection with Timpanogos Highway. Be aware, flaggers are stationed on this alignment and will stop traffic occasionally for a moment or two to allow construction vehicles access across the road. The signal currently at Highland Blvd. remains and an additional, temporary signal is active at the main entrance to Center Point Shopping Center. Motorists wishing to travel north or south on Highland Blvd. need use this temporary signal. This temporary configuration will be in place until the end of August. Please visit our website for more information regarding this change.
*The Murdock Canal Trail Project is working at 3200 North and has a portion of the road closed. For information regarding this project, please contact Provo River Water Users Association at 801-796-8770. This work is not associated with the Timpanogos Highway Project.*
*NEW* - At the new commuter lane undercrossing at Highland Boulevard, crews continue building walls and placing fill material. Rebar installation is scheduled to begin within the next week.
*NEW* - For at least the next two weeks crews are scheduled to place new concrete pavement on the north side of S.R. 92 from approximately 6400 West in Highland to the temporary intersection for Highland Boulevard. As early as Aug. 29, drivers are scheduled to be moved onto the new concrete. The intersection at 6400 West is planned to re-open and Gambol Oak will be closed temporarily.
*NEW* - Beginning as early as Aug. 20 crews will place the final asphalt surface from 6400 West to the Alpine Highway (S.R. 74) during daylight hours. For the next two weeks, EB and WB movements will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Drivers should expect traffic shifts and temporary closures of the cross streets to allow the paving operation to pass by. Once the north side is paved toward the end of Aug., traffic will be shifted to the north and crews will begin removing a thin layer of the old asphalt and placing the final driving surface on the south half of the road.
The intersection of Tamarack Drive and Timpanogos Highway remains closed for reconstruction. This closure will most likely last through early September. During this closure, residents should use a detour route on Highland Blvd. to Sunflower Drive.
Through August, crews will be working through the night in the Dry Creek area on walls and the bridge at Highland Blvd. No effect to traffic is anticipated. Every effort will be made to minimize noise from construction vehicles for surrounding residents.
Continuing through the end of September, between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. daily, flaggers will be on site in the Dry Creek (big dip) area and may occasionally stop traffic for a moment to allow construction vehicles access into the work zone. In addition, there may be times when a one-way flagging operation is necessary. Please expect delays in this area.
Be aware that some shoulder work and lane closures may occur between 6400 West and 6000 West for landscaping. No delays are expected.
The westbound lanes narrow to one lane at approximately 6400 West. Please slow down and watch for merging traffic from the left lane. Expect some minor slowing in this area during the morning as a result, and use caution.
**All dates are subject to change due to weather-related issues.**
There are a number of locations along Timpanogos Highway at which flaggers are stationed to assist construction vehicles that must cross the roadway. Please slow down and obey the flaggers' instructions.
S.R. 92's new alternative name is "Timpanogos Highway." The road will still be officially designated as S.R. 92, but its new "official" alternative name is now Timpanogos Highway (replacing the previous alternative name: "Highland Highway").
Work hours are between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week (unless otherwise noted).
