No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century
that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences
greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own.

In 1953, Earth experienced a War of the Worlds. Common bacteria stopped the aliens.

Producer George Pal and director Byron Haskins' create a landmark film adaptation of the H. G. Wells classic. Instead of basing the story in it's original setting it was set in contemporary America where it's themes began to manifest as the echo of the Cold
War and the fear of communist attack.

What remains is a timeless classic where the atmosphere and tension un rivals that of many of the SF movies of the 50's. The special effects were almost definitely ground-breaking for it's time and the alien ships are extremely well conceived.

Thirty-five years ago
Earth was invaded by what seemed at the time an invincible army of aliens. Were it not for the aliens' susceptibility to ordinary bacteria, the invasion would have been successful, the common cold accomplished what atomic bombs had failed to do. The aliens were stopped, but not defeated.

The aliens did not die. Their complex molecular structure merely retreated into a form of suspended animation, imprisoning them in a state of involuntary hibernation.

Revived by accidental exposure to radioactive waste, the aliens have resumed their deadly mission to rid the Earth of all human life and prepare it for alien colonization.
